Smart Advice: Guide: Instagram Maps Sparks Privacy Concerns

Instagram has launched a new Map feature, but just days after its release, many users are voicing frustration and concern. From fears of stalking and doxxing to annoyance at Instagram copying Snapchat’s Snap Map, the reaction has been far from positive.

While Meta insists the feature is optional and designed to help users explore posts and Reels by location, privacy advocates worry it could put vulnerable users such as domestic violence survivors — at risk.

What Is the Instagram Map Feature?

The new Instagram Map lets you:

  • Share your active location with selected friends.
  • Browse posts and Reels by the locations tagged in them.

Meta says it is “opt-in” only, meaning you must enable it yourself. By default, if you haven’t given Instagram access to your location, the feature is off.

Why People Are Worried About Instagram Map

Critics say the feature looks like a Snapchat Snap Map clone and does little to improve the Instagram experience. Others are concerned about:

  • Privacy risks — especially for users in dangerous situations.
  • Potential stalking or harassment if location data is misused.
  • Confusion about whether the map shows live location or just tagged content.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri clarified that:

“Your last reel is showing up on the map, not your current location. Your live location is not being shared, and it will never be unless you decide to share it.”

How to Turn Off Instagram Map Location Sharing

If you want to make sure Instagram isn’t sharing your location through the Map feature, here’s how to disable it on both Android and iOS:

  1. Open Instagram and tap Messages in the top right of your Feed.
  2. Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
  3. Go to Settings (top right corner) and select “No one” under location sharing.
  4. Tap Update to save your changes.

Note: If you haven’t enabled location access for Instagram in your phone settings, the Map is disabled by default and you won’t see these options.

Instagram says improvements to the feature’s design are coming soon to reduce confusion. Until then, if you value privacy, it’s best to double-check your settings and keep location sharing off unless you fully trust the people you’re sharing with.
